    Places Reading Practice

This is the time of year I teach places and the verb ir in Spanish 1.  I loosely follow the Realidades 1 textbook, however over the years I have supplemented their original Chapter 4A list to include more places, particularly cognates.  My favorite thing about this chapter is that it is the perfect way to review previous material, particularly verbs and weather.   At the beginning of the unit, I always have my students use the mini white boards to draw pictures of the places.  I find drawing is a nice ease into the chapter and students enjoy it. While they draw, I walk around the room and talk with my…

    Preparing for Online Instruction

Like countless teachers around the world, my district is moving to online instruction this week due to Covid-19.  Our schools have already been closed for 2 weeks, but our goal is to ease into online instruction and do the best we can.  Each week I will be creating a couple 20 minute lessons my students will do independently and then be available for daily office hours.  During this time of social distancing I have spent a lot of time brainstorming different activities my students can do at home and reflecting on what the most essential parts of my curriculum are.  I don’t know if I’ll see my students again in…

    Quizlet in the Classroom

It has only been in the last couple years I’ve really started using Quizlet both personally and with my students.  If you aren’t familiar with the site, it is pretty simple: Quizlet is online flashcards. As a student, I loved flashcards and so as I’ve studied for various tests the last couple years, Quizlet was an irreplaceable tool.  As I’ve shared in a previous post, Quizlet was the main way I prepared for the selected response portion of the National Boards Component 1 assessment .  Once I’d really used Quizlet for myself, I started using it more for my students.  I primarily use Quizlet as a vocabulary study tool for my…

    National Boards: Component 4

Component 4 includes 3 parts: Knowledge of Students and Assessment, the Professional Learning Need and the Student Need.  Unfortunately there is no way around it, Component 4 is a beast.  It is the component with the most to keep track of and documents to submit, which makes organization key.  Below are my recommendations for Component 4, however you should always check the National Board’s website for official instructions. I did Component 4 last and it was the only component I completed that year.  At that point, I had learned from working on the previous components, so I hit the ground running.  My colleague and I got together over the summer…

    National Boards: Component 3

It might just have been because this was my first component, however Component 3 was by far my most stressful.  I set goals of when I wanted my videos done that I just never seemed to meet, whether it was because the videotaping equipment didn’t work well, my lesson didn’t go as planned or because my students had way too much fun being taped.  In the end, I finished my videos well into the spring and my written commentaries with about a week to spare. In each of my videos I had portions where I was leading large group instruction and portions where students worked in small groups or pairs. …

    National Boards: Component 2

In my opinion Component 2 was the least time consuming of the components and the most straight forward.  Which is why may teachers recommend doing Component 2 in the same year at Component 3. Personally, I did Component 2 in the same year as Component 1, for more on that, refer back to my previous post.   Component 2 centers around differentiation for 2 students.  I chose to show how I progressed two of my Spanish 1 students’ reading skills through authentic texts.  I selected a formative assessment as my first assessment and the chapter’s summative assessment for my second one.  My goal was to show that each of my students…

    National Boards: Component 1

Preparing for the Component 1 assessment can be a daunting task.  It includes 45 selected response questions and 3 constructed responses, all designed to test your knowledge of language acquisition, the Spanish language, phonetics, learning styles, the 5C’s, ACTFL proficiency levels and the list goes on.  Here is my best advice before beginning to prepare: Take a breath. When viewed as a whole it is overwhelming, however I found that when I sat down and broke the test up into specific sections and topics, it became more manageable.  Overall my Component 1 score was my highest and this is what worked for me, keep in mind you should always refer…

    My National Board Certification Journey

Yesterday was an exciting one in my house, because this arrived in the mail:  I’ve known since December that I had received my National Board Certification in Spanish, but somehow the arrival of my certificate made it all seem real. When I began working on my certification in the fall of 2016 I didn’t really understand what I was getting in myself into.  I had decided over that summer that I wanted to pursue my National Board Certification, but beyond that I did not have a plan.  I had also begun taking classes for my Master’s Degree in Spanish in the spring of 2016 and my logic was “Well, if…

    Telephone Pictionary

In college, my roommates loved to play a game called telephone pictionary.  It was their favorite large group game and it was played at most gatherings we hosted.  After playing telephone pictionary for years with my friends, I had a revelation a few years back: I could use this game as a classroom activity with my students!  And I am happy to report that they love it! I teach Spanish 1, 2 and 5 and I use it in every level, with some modifications, which I will get into below.   Here is how the game works: Pre-cut paper into squares.  I cut a piece of paper into 16 pieces, like…

    Bell Ringer Activities

When I began my first teaching job, my colleagues would often reference openers during our PLCs.  It took me a while to figure out that they were talking about what I had always heard of as bell ringers, a short activity done at the beginning of class to practice specific grammar or vocabulary.  While I had some experience with these types of activities, I was still a bit unsure of how to use or create them for my classes.  Now 8 years later, I use openers almost daily in my Spanish 1 and 2 classes.  Most days we practice the grammar or vocabulary of our current theme, but occasionally I use…
